Because I needed a why.
There needed be more than a love of fashion and style in my photographs.
There needed to be more than creating beautiful images.
I needed a why.
Why am I doing this? What is the purpose? And unless I could come up with the answer, I knew my business, my brand, and my head would be all over the place, and never really focusing in on what made my photography experience unique and lasting.
When I began to focus in on offering the majority of my business to modern high school senior portraits, I did so because I love giving girls that experience. I love creating gorgeous images and making them feel on top of the world. I love the emails from Moms who were thanking me for what the images and experience did for their daughter’s self esteem.
And I thought that was my why.
Because I knew what insecurity was like in High School, because I lived it. Every day.
I was never THAT girl. You know the one. The always gorgeous, always perfect, the one all the other girls wanted to be. So I thought I would make a difference in the lives of high school girls by giving them an experience where they get to feel like that girl. Even if it’s just one day. A day to feel like the most gorgeous girl in their school, with images to prove it.
Little did I know, it was only a small portion of what God was beginning to stir in me.
If you’re reading this as a photographer, you know that the CreativeLIVE seminar featuring the modern glamour portraiture of Sue Bryce was a game-changer of inspiration in the way hundreds of us view the portrait business. Many, many women photographers I spoke with found themselves emotional in seeing the experience she gave her clients. How she gave the “everyday” woman a transformation in front of the camera that blew each one away with her consistent results. So many of us watching were totally wrecked by the end of the weekend.
Because we wanted to give that same experience to our clients too.
It reminded us of our why. Somehow between the marketing strategies, SEO tactics, conferences, and website design we had lost our why. Or at least I did.
I poured over my website and my blog, looking for things I could tweak. Asking myself questions like, Could my reason for doing what I do have a deeper meaning? Could this really be a ministry of sorts? Could my little photography business impact a generation of women? Was it possible that my desire to pour myself into high school senior portraits was not to make my clients FEEL like THAT girl, but to redefine the iconic conception of who THAT girl even is?
The answer, was right in front of me. Hiding in the “Meet Tiffany” section of my blog, I had placed one of my absolute favorite quotes,
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.’ We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Marianne Williamson
This. This my friends, is my why. The launching pad of the new way I will view my photography business forever.
Shine brilliantly, because you were born to do nothing less.
“Men and women who have lived wisely and well will shine brilliantly, like the cloudless, star-strewn night skies. And those who put others on the right path to life will glow like stars forever.” Daniel 12:3 MSG
This is just the beginning of the changes that are coming. Amazing changes that will create an experience so unique and wonderful, I can hardly contain my anticipation. I know God has mind blowing things in store for this business. After all, it’s really His, not mine. I just get to enjoy the ride.
