Portland, Yarmouth, and Freeport Maine Newborn Photographer Tiffany Farley, http://tiffanyfarley.com

I photograph mothers and families all across the country (and at times even beyond!). Often my session planning includes booking a flight, and planning the details of my travel leading up to my arrival. But this session was just minutes from my home in Yarmouth! I have known Nick and Amanda since college, so going on….goodness…15 years now! I was SO excited when they asked me to do an in home newborn session to celebrate the arrival of their second daughter, Emma!

Here are just a few of my favorites photographed on black and white film..

I most often arrive to the session first needing to decide where to take the majority of the photographs. Every single house has different light, in different rooms, at different times of the day. I have just one approach- we go where the very best light is, because, as Justin & Mary teach (photographers I have learned so much from) you have to think of light as the other person in the image. It’s that important.

Sometimes that’s a master bedroom or a nursery- or other times it’s a bathroom (Yup- I’ve actually done that!) or in this case after trying some other spots, I caught eye of the perfect window light in their entryway mud room. “There it is” I remember thinking. So we cleared a few things out of the way and made magic happen in a room where they hang their coats, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Sure, I could have a studio where I control the light a hundred percent of the time and the images look exactly the same every time. But that’s just it. The images would look exactly the same every time. I LOVE giving families these portraits that also celebrate the home they brought their baby home to. Whether it’s a first or forever home- it makes each one so much more meaningful and rich with story for them to always remember.
